How to Avoid Burnout and Find Balance with Nick Lind
What does it mean to live a life that you love?
For many people, it’s all about loving the work that you do. I know how that goes: I love the work that I do as The Hashtag Agent. I’m passionate about helping others, and my work taps into that passion! I am fueled by knowing that the resources that I create are helping revolutionize how others are approaching their business, and are creating lives that they love.
But that’s not the only thing that makes me love my life: my hobbies and outside activities are a huge part of what helps fuel my passion. My time spent with my family helps create a well-rounded story, one that I am excited and passionate about living.
So how can you work on finding balance in your life? In a recent episode of the #REalAdvice podcast, I talked to Nick Lind. He’s a million dollar earner, and knows what it takes to create a life that he loves. We talked about balance and burnout, and I think that he had some incredible insights that I’m excited to share with you.
This post is inspired by episode 26 of the #REalAdvice podcast. You can listen to the full episode on the podcast page, and connect with Nick Lind.
Pursue More Than Work
When people ask what you love, do you immediately respond with work?
That’s great that you love what you do (I mean, I love what I do!): but only focusing on work is a recipe for burnout.
When you love something, you’re dedicated to spending time doing just that.
Loving your work, and what brings you income is a great way to be able to find happiness in your job, but if you aren’t careful, that will encompass your life. You won’t be able to keep up the momentum, and will eventually fall prey to burnout.
How can you offset that?
Pursue passions outside of work. Do you like surfing? Take up that challenge! Are you a whiz at chess? Tutor at your local community college. Are you a musician? Play your instrument daily! Are you a Disney parks fan? Get a pass, and go as often as you can!
I spend time with my family: my wife and my son. We take vacations, and go to theme parks and on camping trips. I go to the gym almost every day, and am passionate about my fitness.
These pursuits outside of my work help fuel me.
I’d also like to challenge you: if you don’t have a hobby, go find one! Don’t just say that Netflix is your hobby: there is a time and a place to do something passive, but a hobby is something that stretches you and challenges you and helps you grow. Go find something that you can do that you’re passionate about.
Nick Lind loves surfing, and he picked it up because he loves the challenge that it offers.
Create Multiple Sources of Income
One of Nick’s secrets to creating a life that he loves and avoiding burnout is bringing in multiple sources of income.
Diversification of his income has helped eliminate the potential of burnout: each income opportunity has its own unique aspects and creates variety in what he does.
Real estate is a great industry to create multiple sources of income. There are so many different ways to be successful. You have so many options:
Creating investment opportunities
Short term rentals
Custom home builder
Real estate broker
The income possibilities are endless, and attract many people to the industry. However, it takes intentionality and work to create those opportunities.
Choosing a diversified income means that in addition to a 9-5, you’re also going to have the additional income to help support a life that you love.
